ANCIENT AROMATHERAPY

For well-being & health

''I will not venture to evoke antiquity and the practice of medicine with essential oils in Egypt or elsewhere because we do not have enough concrete information to dwell on the subject. We know that the coil that allowed the distillation of alcohol was created in the eleventh century by Avicena, but on the other hand we know the use of the plants themselves through a history written over more than 20 centuries, notably the writings of Dioscorides who proposed at the time a treatise on 519 medicinal plants. We do not have much more in the pharmacopoeia today...''Michel Sommerard

At the origin of this practice...

Aromatherapy has been recognized especially since René Maurice Gattefossé revived its therapeutic use in 1928 and published a book "AROMATHERAPY" which gave its name to this practice. I also had the chance to work with his grandson, because the Gattefossé family owns a farmhouse in Saint Rémy de Provence and we had the same Égrot brand open-fire copper still with which we distilled roses together.

In the 60s, it was the Dr. Jean Valnet, a military doctor who gathered knowledge of phytotherapy and aromatherapy in a book, also addressing the general public and teaching this practice for which I thank him. He gave his recipes through a laboratory (Cosbionat) which does remarkable work and which financially supports our humanitarian action in Madagascar for the construction of schools. I also had the privilege of meeting Dr. Jean Valnet and learning from him.

PCloser to us the passion has spread and I cannot name everyone, but I will speak of my friends, authors and/or high-level scientists, Pierre Franchomme, Daniel Pénoël, Roger Jollois, Marcel Lavabre, Ian Kusmirek, Michael Scholes, Conie Bogart, veterinary Dr Françoise Heitz, Dr Jean Michel Morel from the University of Besançon, Dr Bérangère Arnal, and my professors at the Faculty of Pharmacy in Montpellier, THE Pr Anton, THE Pr Jacques Pellecuer, THE Pr Susplugas, THE Pr MichelParis, with whom I shared the joys of discovery and who even came to my farm in Madagascar and my close friend, Dr.Gerard Magnaudeixcame too..
II would also like to quote Pierre Boiteau who carried out considerable botanical work in Madagascar and was able to treat diabetics with insulin deficiency using a plant from Madagascar, jamblong kernel powder (rotra in Malagasy) which is a remarkable hypoglycemic agent.
Le Prospanker Albert Rakoto Ratsimamangawho founded IMRA in Madagascar and collated and verified the ancestral knowledge of phytotherapy in all regions of the Big Island to perpetuate it and bring local natural remedies to the entire population. Today it is the Dr Delphin Rabehaja at the IMRA laboratory which analyses our essential oils throughout the year to allow us to rectify our work if necessary and improve it. Plants have variability, essential oil too and sometimes it is necessary to dry plants better before distilling them or to distill them fresher for example, or after the fruit or the flower depending on the results we are looking for.

The oilsessential

An essential oil is defined by the AFNOR NY 75-006 and ISO 9235 standards
Essential oil is a complex aromatic plant volatile product that can be extracted from the plant using three different techniques; steam distillation, cold expression, and pyrogenation.

1) Theresteam distillation using a still.

The plants are placed in a tank through which water vapour passes, carrying with it certain aromatic principles contained in the plants. The vapour is then cooled in a serpentine immersed in cold water and in which it becomes liquid again by separating into two phases: one aqueous, composed of water and soluble plant principles, calledfloral water or hydrosol, and the other, composed of molecules insoluble in water, essential oil.

These two phases are separated by gravity difference in a Florentine vase, or separator, or essential oil container. Most essential oils are lighter than water and are harvested at the top of the essential oil tank. Others, such as clove and cinnamon, are heavier than water and are harvested at the bottom of the essential oil tank, which is shaped to suit. For some oils, such as cinnamon bark, cascade essential oil tanks must be installed to harvest the heavy and light phases and then combine them to obtain the totum.

The aqueous part loaded with aromatic principles is called hydrolate Or floral water. In the past were known: cornflower water, used as an eye drop, rose water, for beauty care and orange blossom water for flavoring in baking and for baby care. It is the first floral smell of babies' lives because almost all pediatric products (talcum powder, softening creams etc.) are scented with bitter orange blossom (Neroli).
Following a 1985 law that prohibited the retail sale of certain essential oils such as common sage or hyssop (remarkable in asthma problems) and mugwort, I began to successfully study the impact of the hydrosols of these prohibited essential oils. I therefore produced many varieties of hydrosols such as fennel, savory, thyme, clove, sage, etc. for human and veterinary medicine and in particular to treat bees parasitized by varroa.

At that time we did not have the current filtration equipment and my hydrosols, without preservatives, filled up quite quickly with filaments (fungi) which made them undrinkable and I gave up, but if we are able to produce fresh hydrosols it is a brilliant therapy with which I have treated many people and in particular babies.

Basic Aroma Tips

THE DIFFUSION OF ESSENTIAL OILS

Breathing is the number one function of the body.

Indeed, we breathe on average 15 to 20kg of air per day... it is therefore our main food. Essential oils diffused in the house have a protective action for the whole family. They stimulate breathing, immune defenses, destroy many potentially pathogenic germs, they have a stimulating or relaxing action, and provide a feeling of well-being. You can diffuse essential oils without risk by respecting reasonable diffusion times or use static diffusers, scent balls, or wooden diffuser caps, or even paper diffusers that bring a pleasant note like a fragrant smile to your passage.

    • SPECIFIC ADVICE

Essential oils can also be used orally. I prepare syrups for my children by mixing ravintsara and tea tree in honey or in an organic cane sugar syrup and I give them a spoonful before leaving for school. For my part, since I have a little diabetes, I lick them, pure, in the palm of my hand according to my needs.

Everyone's needs, moreover, are all different as we are all different ourselves; also I will be happy to personally respond to your requests to the extent of my skills to help you in your search.
